J-PLEx 8th-12th Grade

Judea High

Judea High is the next step in your child’s Jewish education and Temple Judea involvement. Judea High is a program designed specifically for our 8th-12th graders, focusing on issues that are affecting them and their peers. On Monday nights our clergy and education team gather with our teens to build relationships, have genuine and interesting discussions, and learn together.

“Monday nights are a welcome respite from the pressures of academics and sports. Sophie looks forward to the dinners, topics of discussion, social events and the monthly “Better Together” visits with the elderly residents at The Palace. Through it all, she has gained life perspective that will serve her well as she heads off to college in the fall.” - Michelle Kaufman (Parent)

Better Together is Temple Judea’s partnership with The Palace in Coral Gables to bring together our teens and seniors for learning and conversation. Once a month, we meet at a restaurant in Coral Gables and then walk to The Palace together to plan and run the program. Teens will learn about culture, history, and compassion from the participating seniors. We are thrilled about this partnership and are looking forward to all of the great relationships that will develop over the year.

JTY (Judea Temple Youth)

JTY, our senior youth group, also meets on Monday nights after Judea High, from 7:00-8:00, and is open to all 8th-12th graders. JTY is a youth led, adult advised organization with a student board who plans all of the events over the year. One or two Monday nights a month, JTY will have a fun, exciting program for all of our participants after Judea High. There will also be trips, conventions, and many programming opportunities throughout the year for JTY members. You can expect everything from game night to ice skating to social action.

NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth)

NFTY is the Union for Reform Judaism’s teen movements. As the URJ Youth's signature year-round program, more than 8,000 6th through 12th graders participate in NFTY programs that teach compassion, fight injustice, engage with Israel, and build community. NFTY is the safe, home-away-from-home that inspires our teens to become their best selves and empowers them to change the world.

JTY is a part of NFTY in the NFTY-STR region, which serves Jewish teens from the Keys to Central Florida. There are 19 NFTY regions and we come together as NFTY-STR many times over the course of the year.

Rosh Hodesh

Rosh Hodesh is a monthly club for 8th and 9th grade girls to come together to talk, learn, craft, and eat. We talk about issues facing teen girls, as well as learn about what it means to be a Jewish feminist in the world today. This is a great club for any girl who is not sure about her next step as a Jewish woman after her Bat Mitzvah. We will join together for dinner and discussion once-a-month on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00pm, after J-PLEx. Rosh Hodesh is a national program provided by Moving Traditions.

Shevet Achim

Shevet Achim meets monthly and is a club for 8th-10th grade boys. It is a space for Temple Judea boys to spend time together, share, and learn about what it means to them to be a Jewish man. There will be opportunities to talk about sports, tv, money, advertising, and more, all while spending time with Temple Judea friends. Shevet Achim is also a part of the Moving Traditions research based teen curriculum.

Madrichim

After 7th grade, our students can serve as Madrichim at J-PLEx. You will have fun, gain leadership skills, and earn community service hours. Madrichim help our teachers in the classroom, work with our specialists in art or cooking, or help younger students will Hebrew. There are a few different ways to be a Madrich/a at Temple Judea:

  1. Sundays (9:30am-12Noon)- Work with our K-6th grade students in a class or specialty area.
  2. Wednesdays (4:30pm- 6:30pm)- Work with 4th-6th grade students in Hebrew or Limmud.
  3. B’nai Mitzvah Madrichim (Sundays and Wednesdays)- Work with Gaby and help students who are preparing for their B’nai Mitzvah.
