We recognize that there are many competing priorities in the lives of families today. As such, we understand that students will need to miss class from time to time. Students may miss some classes before make-up work will be assigned.
The religious school office will be in touch with the student’s parents about the course of action for excessive absences. The final decision will be made by the Director of Education in consultation with the parents. Some possible outcomes could include the following: • Completing make up work • Hiring an outside tutor at the family’s expense • Extending the bar/bat mitzvah date
Consistent attendance is necessary for successful learning. Our goal of producing young Jews, knowledgeable in the areas of celebrations, culture, history, ethics, Bible and Hebrew who are active participants in Jewish life, can only be accomplished through regular participation in our Religious School program. The limited hours we have to achieve the goals of our program is challenging. We, parents, students, teachers, and the synagogue are all partners in ensuring a strong and meaningful Jewish education. We thank you in advance for your assistance and support.
Appropriate Dress
“A scholar should dress neatly and should not wear clothes stained with grease and dirt. He should not dress flashily to attract attention nor shabbily so as to suffer disrespect. His garments should be modest and appropriate.” – Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Laws of Talmud Torah 5:9
Inherent in the religious education program at Temple Judea is an attempt to teach our children the difference between sacred and profane. What goes on between the walls of this building is holy. We pray together, we study together, and we play together. All of these activities are holy because they take place within the context of Jewish space and Jewish community. The way we come to study Torah at Temple Judea deserves a certain respect and we begin by coming to learn with appropriate Temple clothes. On Sunday mornings please be sure that each student is wearing appropriate clothes for Temple. It is understandable that weekday students come from school so whatever is appropriate on school days applies as appropriate here.
Inappropriate dress includes: ripped and tattered t-shirts and shorts, flip flop pool shoes and dirty jeans. No t-shirts with obscenities or foul jokes will be permitted. Any student that arrives with inappropriate dress will be asked to call home for a change of clothes. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain an environment that re-enforces the values we are striving to teach.
Cell Phone Policy
Religious school is a place for the business of learning. Our students deserve and require a learning environment that is conducive to learning. It is the policy of the Shir Ami Religious School of Temple Judea that all cell phones are turned off during religious school hours, including break. If a parent or anyone else needs to contact a student during religious school, please call the education office at (305) 667-7243.We will always have someone to answer the phones and will be happy to deliver a message to a student.
If a student is using the cell phone during religious school they will be asked to turn it off.If the use becomes excessive the cell phone will be kept in the religious school office until the conclusion of school where it may be picked up by a parent. We thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
Class Placement Policy
At the Shir Ami Religious School of Temple Judea we take great care in determining student placement. As such it is our policy not to move students from the class in which they are assigned.Parent may make a request to the Director of Education to move their child to another classroom. The final decision will be made by the Director of Education in consultation with the Education Committee Chair. No child will be moved to another class at the request of another parent.
Dismissal
For the Safety of Our Children…. It is extremely important that all parents follow our dismissal procedures. We have supervision in specific areas at pick up times and for the safety and security of our children everyone must abide by our carline procedures.
At the end of the day all children should be picked up in the Religious School Car Line that takes place at the Pre-School Drive Thru. Alternatively, you are, of course, welcome to park and pick your child up at his/her classroom.
No children will be permitted to wait at the white school gate or on the Granada side of the building. There is no adult supervision. Please help us ensure the safety of all of our children and do not ask your children to meet you at the white school gate or on Granada Boulevard. We appreciate your cooperation.
Early Dismissal
If you need to pick your child up early you must come to office to sign him/her out. You will receive a green slip to give your child's teacher. You should not go directly to your child's class to pick him/her up without going to the Education Office first.
